About me
I(Suzan) have been breeding for 30 years and have been in the Veterinary field for 30 yrs as well, my husband is a licensed Veterinarian w/ his own practice here in Maine. I am also a canine behaviorist and trainer and adore dogs! Aside from my Pugs & Boston's I also live with beautiful Bullmastiffs! My dogs are my life and get the best of everything, they are all house dogs since I couldn't possibly imagine having a dog that you didn't live with and can't imagine how boring and lonely the life of a kennel dog would be, its heart breaking to think of. I integrate canine psychology into raising our puppies and it shows, our pups are not only gorgeous, loving and sweet but also incredibly intelligent!
interestsDOGS! :)I have loved animals since my earliest memories watching old real to real home movies of me as a baby in diapers covered in beagle puppies (my grandfather used to breed Beagles) all toothless laughing and laughing like babies do when they are having the best time! Animals have always been a huge part of my life. I have studied animal ethology since I was a child, not knowing I was studying ethology but that’s exactly what I was doing, I have always had some natural ability to understand animals, what was going on in their heads and they always seemed to understand me, being frightened of other people they would come right up to me, my mother used to love to tell the story of me when I was 3 yrs old finding a duck on the beach of a lake that had gotten a fish hook caught in his beak and all tangled in the fishing line, people were chasing him all over the beach trying to help but just scaring the poor thing more since he couldn’t fly because his wings were tangled and one of his legs was tangled, but he waddled up to me and allowed me to pick him up while a man untangled & cut the fishing line away from him and was able to pull the hook from his beak, the duck never even scratched me, I let him go and he waddled towards the water I remember him looking back whether it was at me or not I don’t know but I like to think so. In order to get close to wild animals you need to understand them, in order to catch a loose dog you need to have them be able to trust you and in order to work with very dangerous horses you need to get inside their heads and be able to see things from their point of view. I’ve worked with all kinds of wildlife, trained Hunter Jumpers in my younger years in Bartow/Ocala Florida. I am also a professional artist and I've been in the veterinary field for 30 years. />I live with wonderful Pugs (Madoxx & Maddy) and my Boston Terrier (Jillan's Boston Bean or Jilly-Bean as we call her), I also have beautiful Bullmastiffs, my dogs are my life, I never saw any point of having a dog you didn’t live with I am always sad for dogs who have to spend their lives in kennels especially Bullmastiffs since they are so people oriented dogs. />I have Chronic Lymes Disease, after 8 surgeries on my hands the doctors finally figured out what was wrong with me, at this point it is not curable and causes horrible nerve pain, my dogs always know when I'm having a bad pain day and stick right by my side to comfort me. I am always in pain but some days it's so bad I literally cannot move but force myself in order to take care of my dogs, I don't know what I'd do without them. I lived with chronic pain now for over a decade and I can't say it gets any easier, but my dogs make it easier. />I put so much time, effort and money into my rescue program because partially I cannot deal with seeing an animal that has been abused or neglected (or a child either for that matter) I would need to be held back because I would be afraid of what I'd do to someone I saw purposely hurting an animal or child! />I also want to give back to dogs for what they have given me, although I could never give back as much as they have taught me, as much love as they have given me no matter how long I help my rescues. Some "people" seem to think pets are disposable, this is why I am so particular about who gets one of my babies and so far my puppy people have been the BEST, truly kind, loving people that anyone would want to have as a friend, and they are all my friends and actually part of the family, some coming back for a second or even third puppy from me, they are definitely family! I also do canine behavioral therapy and positive reinforcement training, I do all the training on my own dogs as well as the rescues I take in, mostly taking in rescues that no one else will because of a medical problem, or behavioral problem/s since I can deal with pretty much any issue, it's rare to find a truly mean dog, most are defensive and have been so abused I can't say I blame the poor things for lashing out at people when all they've known is pain from them, I have to teach them that not all people are bad and they learn, slowly but they learn to trust again and even to love again, we-people could learn so much from dogs!!! />I breed a litter a year & enjoy every minute of the two months I have to spend with them, while getting them ready for their new homes. /> />
favorite musicI love most music, I play classical music for the pups at night and during the day alternate playing music for dogs with sound effects CDs to sound desensitize the pups so they are never afraid of a sudden loud noise!
favorite tv showsNO TIME But the dogs like to watch sometimes :)
favorite moviesUnfortunately I rarely have time to go to the movies or even watch TV.
favorite gamesI play LOTS of games with my dogs, my training is always made into a game, I belive training should be fun for both the dog/pup and their handler!
favorite booksI am constantly keeping up to date on all the latest books on canine medicine, reproduction, ethology, behavior and training as well as attend the yearly AAHA Veterinary Conferences. The internet is a wonderful thing but it is also full of bad or dangerous misinformation! If anyone has a question regarding their dog/s I am always more than happy to answer it.
